Project: Support for Christian Families in the Village of Ugania – India

Promoter: Santi Francisco e Jacinta APS

Location: Ugania, Chamarajanagara, Mysore, India

Beneficiaries: 15 Christian families, totaling approximately 120 people (women, men, and children)

Context:

The village of Ugania, located in Chamarajanagara, Mysore, India, is a small rural community predominantly composed of Hindu residents. Within this setting, 15 Christian families live as a religious minority, facing severe poverty and social discrimination.

These families struggle with inadequate housing, lack of access to clean water, electricity, and proper sanitation. Education opportunities are limited, and many children are forced to leave school early to support their families.

Their primary source of income comes from unstable and poorly paid agricultural labor for wealthier Hindu families. This precarious employment fails to meet their basic needs, often pushing them into debt.

Despite these hardships, these families show remarkable resilience and a strong faith. However, without targeted support, they remain trapped in a cycle of poverty.

This project aims to break that cycle by providing sustainable resources, skills, and education, helping them build a dignified and independent future.

Project Goal:

Improving the Living Conditions of These Families Through:

Purchase of 15 Cows (one per family) to start sustainable milk production and create an independent income-generating activity in dairy farming.

Provision of Basic Agricultural Equipment and, if resources allow, the purchase of a used tractor to enhance productivity and improve farming operations.

Organization of Agricultural Training Programs to teach modern farming techniques and sustainable resource management, promoting income diversification.

Establishment of Scholarships to enable children to access quality education, reducing school dropout rates and investing in the future of the next generation.

These interventions will help families build a more dignified and self-sufficient future by launching sustainable businesses, increasing their income, and fostering economic and social independence. Additionally, they will provide children with educational opportunities to break the cycle of poverty and contribute to the progress of their community.

Management and Supervision:

The Church of Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus in Ugania, in collaboration with a group of local volunteers, will oversee the overall management of the project in India, ensuring fair and transparent distribution of available resources.

Responsibilities:

Coordinate Activities: Manage interventions, including the dairy farming project, agricultural development, and scholarship program.

Monitor Resource Use and Progress: Track the utilization of resources and assess the progress of beneficiary families, providing regular updates to ensure transparency for donors and supporters.

Organize Training Sessions: Conduct training programs for families on livestock farming, milk production, agricultural management, and other essential skills to ensure the long-term sustainability of productive activities.

Support Beneficiaries: Assist families in planning and managing productive activities, encouraging collaboration and resource sharing among participants.

Scholarship Management: Select scholarship recipients and monitor children’s academic progress to ensure they fully benefit from the support provided.

Financial Plan

Estimated Costs for Project Implementation

Agricultural Equipment: €1,500 – Includes essential tools such as plows, shovels, and irrigation systems, sourced from nearby agricultural markets.

Transportation Costs: €500 – Covers the transportation of cows and equipment from the market to the village.

Total Estimated Cost for Initial Setup: €10,000

Project Expansion – Future Development:

Used Tractor Purchase: €5,000 – To improve agricultural efficiency, facilitate soil preparation, and reduce manual labor, particularly for families working on larger or more difficult terrains.

Scholarships for Children: €250 per child, per year – Aimed at supporting 20 children by covering school expenses such as books, educational materials, and fees. Total annual cost: €5,000.

Sustainability and Long-term Impact:

This financial plan outlines a realistic and sustainable approach to addressing the primary challenges faced by the families of Ugania. By focusing on dairy farming, agriculture, and education, the project seeks to:

• Provide a stable source of income.

• Improve living conditions.

• Invest in the education of children to break the cycle of poverty and create strong foundations for long-term community development.

With the planned financial and educational support, these 15 Christian families will be able to launch independent, productive activities, improve their living standards, and achieve greater economic independence.
